Mushroom Cultivation

Himalayan Research Group took an initiative to popularize the button mushroom cultivation technology in Himachal Pradesh. Button mushroom is an edible fungus grow naturally in the forest. It is commercially cultivated indoors. HRG developed a full technology package (from making an arrangement of raw material till setting up the market linkages) for an easy acceptability by the growers. The activity was initiated in the year 2000 by generating awareness among women and by providing training. Keeping in view the suitable climate conditions areas with temperature variation from 10-30 degrees and moisture vary from 60% were selected initially. To make technology accessible and adoptable HRG set up its own composting unit of 25 ton capacity at vill: Dhangiara in Distt. Mandi. Spawned compost along with casing soil is made available to the trained/interested farmers year round since 2002. Easy availability of raw material is gaining popularity of button mushroom cultivation among farmers in adjoining districts. The crop completes its production cycle within three months and gives 100% return to the farmers.

Button mushroom cultivation is providing economic and employment opportunities to different sections of the society from mule owner (to transport the compost) till retailer in the market. Annually 50-60 tonnes of mushrooms are produced by the farmers after procuring compost form HRG unit. Now unit is supplying compost to growers from District Mandi, Kullu, Shimla and Kinnaur. The spent compost of mushroom is very good manure for agriculture fields and is converted to vermicompost after mixing with dung. This helps in increasing the agriculture production and soil fertility....    Read more..........

The programmes have been broadly divided into conservation, livelihood development, community organization and research & development. All these activities have been supported by different national and international funding agencies. HRG has a well equipped research lab and office at Shimla. The field activities are carried out through its regional centre at Mandi.
